Pancakes

11-IMG_3571

One day, I wanted pancakes. Then I realized: I can make pancakes! I got a pancake recipe from the internet, and I made pancake, and I realized: Pancakes are really easy to make. And: I can make chocolate chip pancakes whenever I want!!!!

My first challenge was a lack of baking powder. Some more internetting led to another revelation: Baking Powder is just Baking Soda and Cream of Tarter! (not necessarily cream of tarter, but an acid) That does explain my grandma’s cookie recipe.

01-IMG_354804-IMG_3560

1/4 C whole wheat flour
1 C white flour
1/4 C cocoa powder
1 1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t cream of tartar
pinch salt
1 T sugar
1 1/4 C milk
1 egg
3 T melted butter
1 C chocolate chips (heaping)

Mix dry ingredients. Break up egg a bit (I use a fork). 02-IMG_3556

Add wet ingredients to dry. Stir. Stir as little as possible, don’t worry about getting out the lumps. If you stir too much the pancakes will be tough, that’s why I stir the eggs first.
03-IMG_3559

Stir in the chocolate chips.

05-IMG_3562

Pour some on on a hot griddle/fry pan. How much depends on how big you want your pancakes – I like to make small ones.

06-IMG_3564

The trickiest part about pancakes is figuring out the timing. It’s ready to flip when you see bubbles on the top. The top should look a little less wet that it started too.

07-IMG_3566

The second half of the cooking is harder to judge, because you can’t tell just by looking at the top. The second half usually takes less time. When you think it’s done, try to flip it to check. If it sticks too bad, it probably needs to cook longer. The color won’t be as dark as the first side, because the texture is rougher (all those bubbles).

Modifications:

I usually replace some of the flour with cocoa powder. I do this with a lot of recipes, because cocoa is actually good for you. (No, really, plain, unsweetened cocoa is actually good for you. The chocolate we usually eat is prepared with lots of fat and sugar – that’s what drives the over all nutrition down.) Also, it is delicious. I usually replace about 1/3 cup. I have a specific reason for that measurement: I have more 1/3 cup measure cups than any other size. There is almost always a clean one. The drawback to adding cocoa is that it makes it harder to judge cooking time. (The batter is brown, so it doesn’t change color as it cooks.)

Sometimes I replace the butter with mashed up banana. I like the flavor. I’ve tried 1/4 C of milk with plain yogurt. That starts to mess with the flavor and texture. Plus then I have to figure out what to do with the rest of the plain yogurt.

One modification I would not recommend is the use of rancid butter. Turns out, rancid butter tastes kind of soapy. It’s not terribly good for you in the long term, but it won’t make you immediately sick (unless you gag on the taste…). It was my first time trying to make blueberry pancakes too.

Bulky Sherlock Scarf

IMG_3379

I started making myself a Sherlock scarf using some fine yarn and small needles. But I got bored. It’s an easy pattern and it’s taking forever. I haven’t given up on that one yet, but bulky yarn is so much more fun to work with.

IMG_3437

The bulky scarf is also a very simple pattern, but it knits up must faster:

CO 14 stitches
1×1 ribbing

Needles: Size 12

Yarn: Lion brand Hometown USA; color: San Diego Navy; 2 skeins
It’s a super bulky weight yarn.

Christmas Treats

Three tasty Christmas treats.

Marshmallow snowmen.

IMG_1864

Dip marshmallows in melted almond bark – add mini chocolate chips for decoration (face and buttons).

(or just skip the chocolate chips and call them snow balls)

———————————-

I don’t actually have a name for these… You can make them at Halloween time and call them eyeballs. (actually, the same color scheme would work for that too)

IMG_1866

Set out round pretzels on wax paper. Melt almond bark, put it in a pastry bag (aka a ziplock baggie with a corner cut off). Deploy the almond bark to the middle of the pretzels and press M&M’s into the middle of each pretzel.

Elf poop cookies

IMG_1865

Follow the recipe for Unicorn Poop Cookies, but only use red and green food coloring ( and leave one un-colored if you want)

Mini Pumpkin Castle

Besides cubicle decorating, my work also has a mini pumpkin decorating contest for Halloween. There tend to be a lot of cute entries, and didn’t really expect to win (I didn’t). Especially when two days before the contest I still didn’t have a plan.

IMG_3186 IMG_3190

I wanted to do something that tied in with my cubicle castle, so I started painting my pumpkin to match it. Then I realized I didn’t have enough time for that, so I dipped the whole pumpkin in the paint can. (it did take a while to dry…)

I made the roof out of three identical triangles hot glued together. I painted the roof to match the tower roofs. I drew the bricks and the door on with sharpie.

George the Eggnog

I was talking with some friends, and the topic of my pet eggnog came up. For some reason, they wanted to see a picture. So, here it is.

Cubicle Castle: The Making of

I started with some large cardboard boxes my friend had in her basement. I connected them using Mr. McGroovy’s box rivets (https://mrmcgroovys.com/). I had planned to use hot glue and duct tape, but I found the Mr. McGroovy website when I was looking for painting ideas and it some really good suggestions – if you are going to do any sort of cardboard construction, definitely check out that website.

IMG_3159

I think the box rivets worked better than the tape and glue would have. I cut the drawbridge after I had connected the cardboard. I used a string to draw a circle for the top of the door, cutting the curve wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

There were tips for painting the wood on the McGroovy site. I got the paint from the ‘as is’ section of the paint aisle (I didn’t even know that existed – it’s pretty cool)

IMG_3163

Using ‘paint pads’ for the base coat really worked well.

IMG_3175

The painting for the bricks is what first got me to the McGroovy site(https://mrmcgroovys.com/how-do-you-paint-that-cool-brick-pattern-on-the-castle/). Admitidly, I stopped after step 4. I was going to shade the bricks, but I ran out of time. And I liked how the looked without it, and was afraid I’d mess it up trying to get too fancy.

I used ginormous Sharpies and free handed all the bricks. I think not using a straight edge was one of the keys; it looks more organic, and there are no glaring mistakes where I would have inevitably messed it up.

I started drawing horizontal lines across the whole thing, the vertical lines to define the bricks. I tried not to make the bricks not line up with each other. Then I went over every line again, thickening the lines, rounding the corners, and smoothing any jagged lines.

IMG_3177

The crenelations were made from one long piece of cardboard. I attached one side to the cubicle with straight pins. The other side was on top of the overhead. I folded the bottom and weighted it down to make it stand.

TIMG_3184

IMG_3217

The tops of each tower started as a rectangle of cardboard. I cut an cut from the middle of the top to each bottom corner – leaving me with one isosceles triangle and two smaller right triangles. The right triangles I taped together made an identical isosceles. (Geometry in action!) I used duct tape on the back and masking tape on the front.

I painted the triangles separately, then hot glued them together along the edges. Now, as has happened in every lab science class I’ve taken, the application somehow doesn’t match the reality (aka, the ‘identical’ triangles aren’t really identical). In this case, I used it to my advantage. I used the gap to hold the tower.

IMG_3165

I held the towers to the cubicle with straight pins.

IMG_3172

I took almost week to put the castle up. I started with the rear two towers on Tuesday, then added the front two towers on Wednesday, the crenelations went up Thursday, and the front panel was up for Friday.

The front panel is held up with a lot of straight pins. Putting the pins straight in – like I did for the towers and crenelation – didn’t work, they just pulled out. Used the pins in pairs, at opposite angles.

IMG_3214

I had to rig up something complicated for the door side

Cubicle Castle

I won the office Halloween cubicle decorating contest this year.

IMG_3233

The drawbridge opens, so I can get in and out (although it is awkward, especially if I’m trying to carry something).

IMG_3211

Here’s a different angle, you can see the crenelations on the side and the towers. There was the large panel in front, crenelations along both sides, and towers in all four corners.

IMG_3215

Here’s the inside; I didn’t limit my decorating to just the outside of the castle.

IMG_3206

I dressed up as Rapunzel – the dress didn’t turn out too great, but the hair and crown were pretty awesome.  The crown was painted to match the towers, and the hair was just two yards of fabric – cut the fabric in thirds almost to the end then braided it.

How not to move a couch

I noticed some people trying to get a couch into a third floor apartment…

IMG_3065

(note: the girl on the second floor is standing on the porch rail, not the couch)

I was on my way out, so I didn’t stick around to see if they accomplished their goal.

Costume Ideas

I’m starting to plan costumes for Dragon Con next year. I probably won’t go all out like some people do, partially because I’m lazy, and partially because I‘m going to rank comfort as the most important factor.

I have a few ideas:

Amy, from The Silence (Dr. Who).

I want to dress as Amy, with the tally marks on my arms, and have a Silence behind me. It would be awesome if I could have it floating behind me, like draped over a balloon. But I can’t quite figure out the logistics of that, so maybe just on my back.

Challenges:

Finding something to make the marks with that I won’t react to. I have annoyingly sensitive skin; I know I can’t actually use Sharpie.

Red hair. I think a wig would drive me nuts. Maybe dying my hair? I’ve never dyed my hair before…

List

  • Re-watch The Silence episode
  • Red plaid button down shirt
  • Denim capris (ones I already have?)
  • Temporary red hair dye (trial run)
  • Silence/The Scream mask (get this before scream outfit, or else outfit unnecessary)
  • Scream outfit for back of outfit
    • Black fabric? For pants
    • Black jacket?
    • White button down shirt?
    • Black tie

Kaylee (Firefly)

I love Kaylee, she’s so much fun. I love that she’s so much herself, and so girly, and such a good engineer all at once. Besides, an excuse to watch Firefly again. Maybe buy a parasol.

List

  • Re-watch Firefly
  • Green overalls
  • Pink shirt
  • Teal oriental button down/jacket
  • Teddy bear patch
  • Parasol?

Keladry of Mindelan

This one would be the most technically difficult. I thought about doing it for this year, but never followed through. I think it will be hard to be distinctly Kel. And also comfortable. That’s important.

You ever read a name the same way for a long time, only to realize you were reading it wrong? I first read Protector of the Small around when it first came out. It was the first Tamora Pierce series I read. I just now realized that there is no ‘n’ in ‘Keladry’. I have been reading it ‘Kelandry’ this whole time. The really weird part is that I’ve listened to the audio books too, dozens of times. (It didn’t take me near this long to realize that ‘Voldemort’ was not ‘Vold-er-mont’.) (Wow, my spellcheck recognizes ‘Voldemort’. )

Anyway, I’m going to try to draw her shield myself. I started off on the internet, but I decided I’m not comfortable with just pulling something. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the design. I don’t think I want to carry around a shield. Maybe if I could mount it on my backpack somehow? Maybe just a badge, or some sort of flag.

I want to figure out a glaive, haven’t quite figured out how to do that. The glaive and the shield are her most distinguishing features, so I definitely want to have the shield. That means I have to be Kel after she’s knighted.

Something related to the griffon feather band would be cool.

List:

  • Blue tunic (may have to sew this myself to get what I want?)
  • Grey leggings
  • Glaive
  • Something with Kel’s badge
  • Gloves? (allusion to her griffon caring)
  • Orange feathers (for griffon feather band)

Dragon Con

I just got home from Dragon*Con! It was awesome! Now I am prolonging the experience by watching DragonConTV on YouTube (we were not in a host hotel, so I haven’t seen any of it.

So:

What is DragonCon?

(or, you know, Google it. Or Wikipedia. Or Official WebSite.)

To the uninitiated I have described it as: ‘Have you heard of ComicCon? It’s kinda like that, but not quite as big, and more broad, with more fantasy and sci fi than just comics.’

Now that I’ve been, I still can’t really explain it. It’s a con. It’s completely fan run (which is awesome). It’s almost completely volunteer-run (I heard somewhere that they have, like, 3 paid staff that do things like man the phones and send out postcards throughout the year) (keep in mind that my source is ‘this thing I think I heard once’)

There are these different fan ‘Tracks’, which are like groups of programming for a topic. Some tracks are Fantasy Literature, Urban Fantasy, Young Adult Literature, Trek, Brit (those are the ones I was most interested in) and also things like Puppetry, Skeptics, Science, see all of them here: http://www.dragoncon.org/?q=fan-tracks-view&page=1

How did I end up at DragonCon?

Friend IM’ed me “Want to go to Dragon Con with me next year?”

Me: Google “Dragon Con”, replied “Sure”

Did I dress up?

Only in a very lazy way. I found a Star Trek TNG uniform t-shirt on ThinkGeek. I bought two (one red and one blue) and wore black pants. (Sunday I just wore a Pi t-shirt)

I am already thinking about costumes for next year (If I can manage to not be lazy…)

Blisters

I managed to avoid blisters on the back of my heels. I always get them there. I tried a few different blister products, and switched to my sandals for a few hours each day. However! I did not avoid blisters altogether! … I have knitting blisters…

Next Year

Yeah…I already bought my membership for next year…

Back Home

So, I wrote most of this Monday, but them my computer was being slow, so I lay down for a bit… and now it’s Tuesday…

(I actually got up about 6 and went to my bed, then about midnight to turn off the lights in the living room and shut the window, then back to bed)

And now I’m back to writing things up and watching DragonConTV on YouTube.

And eating more of the chocolate chip pancakes I made yesterday, even though they are kind of dried out, since I forgot to put them away yesterday.
